Hey Arthur: Great Arthur House, Golden Lane Estate, London by Chamberlin Powell and Bon-
The Golden Lane Estate was the first major realised housing scheme for Chamberlin Powell and Bon, who are best know for their Barbican estate, situated on the adjoining site. The Golden Lane estate was Chamberlin Powell and Bon’s winning entry to a competition held by the public health committee and RIBA. The final design for the sixteen storey Great Arthur house was approved in 1955 and was mainly overseen by Chamberlin. The concrete block features a curtain wall made up of aluminium and yellow glass. The blocks’ most eye catching feature is its concrete roof overhang which was designed to conceal the lift mechanism. There is also a roof garden with ornamental pool which has unfortunately been closed for several years for safety reasons.
